This episode is important to anyone in the Influencer Marketing industry. We chat with Murray Legg about the changes Facebook is making to its own platform as well as Instagram and how that will impact on Influencer Marketing going forward.
Murray is a technology entrepreneur with a focus on SaaS products for the marketing and financial industries and has worked in a range of industries from medical device design to investment banking. He has a passion for working in the emerging "social capital" world of influencers and how they ignite and steer public opinion, connections and commerce. Murray is also one of the brains behind the Influencer Marketing platform, Webfluential, working on the tech side of things.
“What Facebook is looking to do after buying WhatsApp and Instagram is streamlining its privacy a lot better,” said Murray. “It’s all underpinned by giving customers a great experience that they can trust and also be able to manage users’ privacy and data appropriately.”

James joined us all the way from the other side of the world to record this episode. He spoke to us from his home in Los Angeles, USA. He is the co-founder and CEO of Paladin Software, an influencer marketing platform.
He talks to us about his journey into the industry, why he thought that there was a gap in the market for their software, why he thinks influencer marketing is now more important than ever and the importance of having a competent human team behind tech tools to ensure campaigns deliver good results.
“A human team behind influencer tech is essential,” said James. “We can build the best tools in the world, but they’re not going to run the campaign for you. At the end of the day you need a trusted advisor, someone who knows the space well and knows what they’re doing to run a successful influencer campaign.”

Jhene Nel is one of the best players in the influencer marketing game, along with her team, they continue to run greatly successful campaigns not only in South Africa but also other African countries and the US. She lets us into some insights on the industry.
“I don’t think that TikTok is the next big thing in South Africa,” says Jhene, “it’s difficult to figure out how to make it work from a South African perspective, even if brands use local content creators, there’s no way to track where there audiences are based, and thus it’s not greatly beneficial to South African brands. But there are ways to use the content that are beneficial.”

The world has been turned upside down and we are living in self-isolation and quarantine. We went from living relatively normal lives, to practicing social distancing and self-isolation in a matter of a week. But, what about the brands during the time of Coronavirus? Brands cannot live in isolation, the show must go on, so to speak, but we must adapt our marketing strategies.
“Now is not the time for brands to sell, now is the time for them to have conversations, listen to their consumers and build relationships and offer communities,” commented Busi. Consumers will remember how brands handled them and the situation when the crisis is over, and that will be invaluable for those who did it with empathy, sensitivity and vulnerability.
